Ingredients

2 1/2 tablespoons canola oil
2 tablespoons small dried shrimp
1 lb daikon radish , peeled
12 inches dried chinese link sausage , casings removed , finely chopped
1 medium shallot , finely chopped
1/2 cup plus 2 tbsp green onion , finely chopped
1/2 teaspoon sugar
2 teaspoons salt
1 1/2 cups rice flour
1/4 teaspoon five-spice powder
5 tablespoons hoisin sauce
1/4 cup chili-garlic sauce
1 red chili pepper , thinly sliced , for garnish
Luo Bo Gao (Daikon Cake) is a classic Cantonese dish that is often served as an appetizer or dim sum addition, usually served with soy sauce or chili oil. The cake has a soft, moist texture and is slightly sweet and savory, thanks to the combination of dried shrimp, Chinese sausage, and daikon. This dish is particularly popular during the Chinese New Year because the cake's round shape symbolizes unity and togetherness.

Instructions

1.Soak dried shrimp in hot water for 30 minutes, then drain and coarsely chop them.
2.Grate the peeled daikon and squeeze excess liquid out with a cheesecloth.
3.In a pan, heat 1 tablespoon canola oil over medium heat and sauté the chopped sausage until browned.
4.Add the chopped dried shrimp, shallot, and green onion. Cook for another minute.
5.Add sugar, salt, rice flour, five-spice powder, hoisin sauce, and chili-garlic sauce to the daikon and mix well. Then, add the cooked sausage and vegetables mixture to the daikon mixture and mix well.
6.Pour the mixture into a greased 8-inch cake pan and steam for 60-70 minutes. Let it cool for a few minutes before cutting into small pieces for serving. Garnish with sliced red chili pepper and serve hot.
