Instructions

1.In a large bowl, cream shortening, butter, and sugar until light and fluffy.
2.Beat in egg, and stir in molasses.
3.Dissolve baking soda in boiling water and add to mixture.
4.Mix flour, cream of tartar, salt, cinnamon, ginger, and cloves; gradually add to molasses mixture and mix well.
5.Cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours.
6.Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
7.On a lightly floured surface, roll out dough to 1/4 in. thickness.
8.Cut into 2x3 inch rectangles.
9.Bake for 8-10 minutes or until edges are firm.
10.Cool on wire racks. Optional: Drizzle with glaze if desired.
