Ingredients

1 cup dried split peas
4 smoked ham hocks ( about 3 3/4 lbs )
1 tablespoon salt
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1/2 teaspoon dried thyme leaves
1/2 teaspoon dried sage
1/2 teaspoon dried marjoram
1 -2 bay leaf
1 1/2 cups diced carrots
1 1/4 cups chopped celery

Instructions

1.Heat oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add onions and garlic, stirring until brown.
2.Add water, lentils, peas and ham hocks. Bring to boil.
3.Add salt, lemon juice, thyme, sage, marjoram and bay leaf. Reduce heat and simmer for 1 hour while stirring occasionally.
4.Remove ham hocks. Pull meat; discard bones and fat. Skim fat from broth. Return meat to broth.
5.Stir in carrots and celery. Simmer until vegetables are soft.
6.Garnish with lemon slice and serve immediately.
