Lacy crisp German-style hash browns are a popular breakfast food in Germany and around the world. These crispy, golden-brown hash browns are made using grated potatoes, and are flavored with white onion, fresh parsley, lemon juice, salt, white pepper, and nutmeg. They can be enjoyed on their own, or as a side dish to a variety of breakfast items, such as eggs, bacon, and sausage. The crispy texture of these hash browns comes from the use of butter in the frying process, which creates a golden and delicious crust on the outside of each potato pancake.

Instructions

1.Using a box grater, grate the potatoes on the largest holes, then transfer them to a large bowl.
2.Add grated white onion, chopped fresh parsley, fresh lemon juice, coarse salt, white pepper, and freshly grated nutmeg to the potatoes, and mix well until the ingredients have combined.
3.In a frying pan, melt the butter over medium-high heat until it's hot and bubbly.
4.Drop spoonfuls of the potato mixture into the frying pan, making sure to flatten each spoonful with a spatula, so that the mixture is thin and spread-out, rather than thick and lumpy.
5.Fry the hash browns until they're golden brown and crispy, about 5-7 minutes per side.
6.Remove the hash browns from the frying pan, and transfer them to a paper towel-lined plate to allow the excess oil to drain.
