Ingredients

1 1/2 lbs tart apples ( about 5 medium-sized apples )
1/3 cup granulated sugar tblsp sugar
1 tablespoon sugar
1/2 cup heavy cream
2 cups all-purpose flour , plus more for the pan
2 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
11 tablespoons unsalted butter , at room temperature , plus more for the pan

Kuchen Borracho, or Drunken Apple Cake, is a traditional Chilean dessert that combines tart apples with a boozy cream sauce. The result is a rich and indulgent cake that is perfect for special occasions. The cake itself is a simple butter cake that is made extra special by the addition of the apples and cream topping. While the name may suggest that it is a heavily alcoholic dessert, the cake is actually quite mild and the alcohol content is balanced by the sweetness and tartness of the apples. Instructions

1.Preheat oven to 350°F (180°C).
2.Peel, core, and slice the apples into thin wedges.
3.In a medium bowl, toss the apples with 1 tablespoon of sugar and let sit for 10 minutes.
4.In a small saucepan, heat the heavy cream until just warm. Add 4 tablespoons of rum, 4 tablespoons of water, and 1 tablespoon of sugar. Stir to melt the sugar and set aside.
5.In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.
6.Add the butter and 1 cup of sugar to a large mixing bowl. Beat with an electric mixer until light and fluffy.
7.Add the eggs and beat until the mixture is smooth.
8.Slowly add the flour mixture to the butter mixture and mix until just combined.
9.Grease and flour a 9 inch (23 cm) cake pan. Pour the cake batter into the pan and smooth out the top.
10.Arrange the sugared apples on top of the batter in a circular pattern.
11.Pour the warm cream and rum mixture over the top of the apples.
12.Bake for 45-50 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean.
13.While the cake is still warm, poke holes all over the surface with a fork. Mix together the remaining 1 tablespoon each of rum and water and pour the mixture over the cake.
14.Let the cake cool completely before serving, preferably chilled in the refrigerator.
