Ingredients

olive oil
1 kg ground beef
350 g mushrooms , chopped fine , as for duxelles ( optional )
2 large onions , small dice
2 garlic cloves , minced
2 tablespoons tomato paste
1 tablespoon dried oregano ( Mediterranean is best )
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon ( optional )
1 cup grated parmesan cheese or 1 cup kefalotiri
1 cup chopped minced parsley
4 eggs , beaten to blend
salt and pepper
500 g phyllo pastry
Kreatopita is a traditional Greek meat pie that is typically served as a main course. Instructions

1.Preheat oven to 180°C. Grease a 9-by-13-inch baking dish lightly with olive oil.
2.In a large frying pan, cook beef over medium heat until no longer pink. Drain any excess fat and place in a large mixing bowl.
3.Add mushrooms, onion and garlic to the same pan. Cook over medium heat until onion is soft and mushrooms have given off their juices. Stir in tomato paste, dried oregano and cinnamon.
4.Add the mushroom mixture to the ground beef bowl. Mix in parmesan cheese, parsley, eggs, salt and pepper.
5.Open pastry and working quickly, lay one sheet of pastry across the bottom of the prepared dish, letting it overhang two opposite sides. Brush pastry with oil. Repeat with remaining pastry, placing pastry crosswise over base of dish, brushing after each layer.
6.Spoon the beef mixture into the pastry-lined dish, spreading evenly. Fold the overhanging phyllo over the beef mixture to cover loosely. Brush top with olive oil.
7.Bake for 50 minutes or until golden brown and crispy.
