Instructions

1.Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
2.In a separate bowl, mix together the flour, baking powder, and spices.
3.In a mixing bowl, beat together the butter and shortening until creamy. Add the sugar and beat for another 3-4 minutes.
4.Add in the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in vanilla extract.
5.Gradually add in the flour mixture, alternating with the milk, and mixing until just combined.
6.Roll the dough into small, thin ropes and then shape them into circles, braids, or figure-eights.
7.Place the koulourakia on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and brush with beaten egg. Sprinkle them with sesame seeds.
8.Bake in the preheated oven for 10-12 minutes, or until golden brown. Leave them on the sheet for 5 minutes before removing to a wire rack to cool completely.
