Ingredients

1 cup split red lentils
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon chili powder
1/4 teaspoon turmeric powder
2 tablespoons tamarind juice ( add more if you like it really sour ) or 2 tablespoons lemon juice ( add more if you like it really sour )
1 small tomatoes , chopped
1/4 cup chopped fresh coriander
3 whole dried red chilies
1/4 teaspoon cumin seed
1 garlic clove , sliced
4 -5 curry leaves ( optional )
3 -4 tablespoons oil , for tempering
Khatti Masoor Daal is a traditional Punjabi lentil dish that is popular all over India and Pakistan. It is a sour and spicy dish made with split red lentils, tomatoes, tamarind juice, and a blend of aromatic spices. Instructions

1.Wash the split red lentils in cold water and place them in a pan.
2.Add 3 cups of fresh water to the pan and bring it to a boil. Once the water comes to a boil, add salt, chili powder, and turmeric powder to the pan. Mix well and let it cook for a few minutes on medium heat.
3.Add chopped tomatoes and garlic to the pan. Mix well and let it cook for 5-7 minutes on medium heat until the tomatoes are soft and mushy.
4.Add tamarind or lemon juice to the pan and mix well. Let it cook for another 5-7 minutes on medium heat.
5.In a separate pan, heat oil over medium heat. Add cumin seed, curry leaves, and whole dried red chilies to it. Let them sizzle for a few seconds and then add the tempering oil to the daal.
6.Mix well and let it simmer for a few minutes.
7.Garnish with chopped coriander and serve hot with rice or roti.
