Ingredients

6 small tomatillos , husked ( about 8 ounces )
4 plum tomatoes ( about 12 ounces )
3 garlic cloves
1 jalapeno
1/2 white onion , halved
vegetable oil , for brushing
2 tablespoons fresh cilantro leaves , chopped
1 teaspoon sugar
kosher salt and black pepper
2 canned chipotle chiles in adobo
corn tortilla chips or twelve 6-inch corn tortilla , quartered , for serving
Salsa is a classic Mexican dip designed to complement a wide variety of dishes. From chips to tacos, burritos to tostadas, salsa has become an American staple as well. This fresh take on the classic recipe comes from Food Network star Kelsey Nixon. She recommends charring the vegetables to give the salsa a smoky depth of flavor. Instructions

1.Preheat the broiler with the oven rack 4 inches from the heat.
2.Rinse the tomatillos and plum tomatoes in cold water, and pat dry. Cut the tomatillos and tomatoes in half.
3.Peel the garlic cloves and place them, along with the jalapeno and onion halves, on a baking sheet. Brush the vegetables lightly with vegetable oil.
4.Broil for 10 minutes, or until the skins of the vegetables are charred.
5.Remove from the oven and let cool for 5 minutes. Peel the skin off the tomatoes, garlic and jalapeno.
6.Cut the stems from the jalapeno and remove most of the seeds. Roughly chop the jalapeno and onion.
7.Put all the vegetables, including any accumulated juices, into a food processor. Add the cilantro, sugar, and 1/2 teaspoon each of salt and black pepper. Puree until smooth.
8.Drain the chipotles and finely chop. Add the chipotles with 1-2 teaspoons of adobo sauce to the salsa mixture. Mix well and season with more salt/pepper as needed.
9.Serve with or over corn tortilla chips or quartered 6-inch corn tortillas.
