Ingredients

1 1/2 lbs beef round steak , cut 3/4 inch thick
3 tablespoons flour
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon dry mustard
1/4 teaspoon pepper
3 teaspoons garlic powder
2 teaspoons shortening
1 can tomatoes
1 small onion , sliced
1 stalk celery , sliced
2 medium carrots , sliced
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1/4 cup red wine
1/4 cup water
hot cooked noodles
mashed potatoes or hot cooked rice

Instructions

1.Preheat the oven to 325°F (165°C) if using oven method.
2.Trim excess fat from the beef round steak.
3.In a small bowl, combine flour, salt, mustard, pepper, and garlic powder.
4.Dust both sides of the steak with the flour mixture.
5.Heat shortening in a large skillet over medium heat, add the steak and brown both sides.
6.Transfer the steak to a 9 x 13 inch baking dish if using oven method, if not continue cooking on the stove top.
7.In the same skillet, cook the tomatoes, onion, celery, carrots and Worcestershire sauce for 5 minutes.
8.Add the red wine and water to the skillet and bring to a boil.
9.Pour tomato mixture on top of the steak in the baking dish.
10.Cover the dish with aluminum foil or lid and bake for 2 hours or until tender, or continue cooking on the stove top until the steak is tender, about 2 hours on low heat..
11.Serve hot Swiss steak over cooked noodles or mashed potatoes or hot cooked rice.
