Kala Chola Pakistani-Style is a traditional dish from the Punjab region of Pakistan. It is a hearty and flavorful meal that is often enjoyed as a main course with rice or bread. The dish is made with black garbanzo beans, also known as kala channa, which are soaked overnight and then cooked with a tomato-based sauce. The addition of spices like turmeric and red chile pepper give the dish a complex and delicious flavor profile. This dish is perfect for vegetarians and vegans looking for a protein-packed meal option.

Instructions

1.Rinse the black garbanzo beans and soak them in water overnight or for at least 8 hours.
2.Drain the soaked beans and add them to a large pot with 3 cups of water. Bring to a boil and then reduce heat to a simmer. Cook for 30-40 minutes, or until the beans are tender.
3.In a separate pan, heat the vegetable oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and jalapeno pepper, and cook until the onion is translucent and the pepper is softened.
4.Add the chopped tomatoes, salt, turmeric, and ground red chile pepper to the pan with the onion and jalapeno. Cook for 8-10 minutes, or until the tomatoes are soft and the mixture has thickened.
5.Add the tomato mixture to the pot with the cooked beans. If needed, add additional water to cover the beans. Add the dried red chile peppers (if using). Bring the mixture to a boil and then reduce heat to a simmer. Cook for an additional 20-30 minutes, or until the flavors have melded together.
6.Garnish the dish with chopped fresh cilantro and finely chopped onion. Serve hot with rice or bread.
