Julekake, typically enjoyed during the Christmas season in Norway, is a sweet bread popular for its delicious taste and festive aroma. Julekake is a source of warmth and comfort during the holiday season, and it fills homes with delicious smells of cinnamon and cardamom. This recipe is baked on a sheet, which gives it a slightly different texture than the more traditional ring-shaped Julekake.

Instructions

.In a large bowl, combine flour, sugar, and cardamom. Make a well in the center.
.In a saucepan over low heat, melt the margarine. Add milk and heat until lukewarm. Crumble the fresh yeast and mix it in until it dissolves.
.Pour the milk mixture into the well in the dry ingredients and combine until the dough comes together.
.Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead it until it becomes smooth and elastic. Place in a greased bowl, cover with a tea towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour.
.Knead the dough again to remove any gas bubbles, add raisins and candied peel, and knead once more.
.Divide the dough in half and shape them into round loaves.
.Place the loaves on a greased baking sheet, brush the top with beaten egg yolk, and let them rise for another 20 minutes.
.Preheat your oven to 200C (390F).
.Bake in the middle of the oven for about 25-30 minutes, or until the bread is golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped.
