2 tablespoons unsalted butter ( or you may substitute the same amount of canola oil , olive oil , sunflower oil , etc . )
1 large yellow onion , chopped ( select ones weighing approx . 12oz . or 340g )
1/4 teaspoon kosher salt ( for onion mixture )
2 cups sour cream
1/2 cup mayonnaise
1/2 cup shredded romano cheese
1 tablespoon sugar
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
1/2 teaspoon kosher salt ( for dip mixture )
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1/4 teaspoon white pepper
chives ( finely chopped over top for garnish ) ( optional )

This recipe is a copycat of the popular onion dip found on the back of Old Dutch and Lays potato chip bags. Instructions

1.Heat butter/oil in a skillet over medium heat.
2.Add chopped onion and kosher salt. Cook for 20-30 minutes stirring occasionally, until caramelized.
3.In a separate bowl, mix together sour cream, mayonnaise, Romano cheese, sugar, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, and white pepper until smooth.
4.Add caramelized onions to the mixture and refrigerate for 2 hours.
5.Before serving, top with chopped chives if desired.
