Ingredients

3 cups soy sauce
1 1/2 cups mirin ( Japanese sweet wine )
1 orange , juiced
6 ounces chopped fresh pineapple with skin
1 Granny Smith apple , cored and chopped
2 cloves garlic
1 teaspoon grated fresh ginger root
4 tablespoons white sugar , divided

Instructions

3.Reduce the heat to medium-low and let the sauce simmer, stirring occasionally, until it thickens and reduces by half, about 20-30 minutes.
4.Add remaining 2 tablespoons of sugar to the saucepan and stir to dissolve.
5.Let the sauce simmer for an additional 5-10 minutes, until it has thickened and the sugar has caramelized slightly.
6.Remove the saucepan from heat and let the sauce cool completely.
7.Strain the sauce through a fine-mesh strainer into a bowl or jar.
8.Store the Japanese Style Teriyaki Sauce in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.
