3 quarts chicken broth ( preferably homemade )
2 large celery ribs , thinly sliced
2 medium carrots , peeled and thinly sliced
1 large onion , chopped
1 large turnip , peeled and thinly sliced
1 large parsnip , peeled and thinly sliced
1 large scallion , white portion only , thinly sliced
2 large fresh thyme sprigs
1/4 teaspoon ground allspice , plus more to taste
2 teaspoons kosher salt
fresh ground pepper

Instructions

1.Rinse the yellow split peas in a colander under cold running water.
2.In a large soup pot, combine the split peas, chicken broth, celery, carrots, onion, turnip, parsnip, scallion, and thyme sprigs.
3.Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat to a gentle simmer.
4.Add the ground allspice, salt, and pepper to the pot. Stir to combine all the ingredients.
5.Cook the soup, stirring occasionally, for 1.5 to 2 hours until the split peas are softened and have broken down.
6.Remove the thyme sprigs from the soup and discard.
7.Using an immersion blender, blend the soup until it is smooth. Alternatively, transfer the soup in batches to a blender to puree until smooth.
8.Return the soup to the pot and reheat if needed. Adjust the seasoning if needed by adding more allspice or salt to taste.
