1 lb Italian sausage ( spicy or sweet , casings removed )
1 marinara sauce , fresh , purchased , divided
1/2 cup parmesan cheese , freshly grated ( about 1 1/2 ounces )
1/3 cup Italian parsley , fresh , chopped , divided
1/3 cup fresh basil , chopped , divided
4 French baguettes , split horizontally
1 cup mozzarella cheese , packed coarselygrated whole-milk

These hearty sandwiches are made with homemade Italian sausage meatballs infused with herbs, parmesan cheese, and marinara sauce, then baked to perfection. Once cooked, the meatballs are nestled on top of a toasted French baguette, slathered with warm marinara sauce and topped with mozzarella cheese. This recipe makes 4 large sandwiches that are sure to satisfy even the hungriest of appetites.

Instructions

1.Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
2.In a large bowl, combine the sausage, 1/4 cup marinara sauce, parmesan cheese, 1/4 cup parsley, and 1/4 cup basil. Mix well to combine.
3.Form the mixture into 16 meatballs, each about the size of a golf ball.
4.Place the meatballs on a baking sheet and bake for 25 to 30 minutes, or until cooked through.
5.Meanwhile, in a small saucepan, heat the remaining marinara sauce over low heat until warm.
6.When ready to serve, toast the baguette halves in the oven or in a toaster.
7.Place 4 meatballs on each baguette half, then spoon the warm marinara sauce over the top. Sprinkle with the mozzarella cheese and remaining parsley and basil.
8.Return the sandwiches to the oven and bake for 10 to 15 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
