2 large onions , wedges
8 ounces white button mushrooms , quartered
1/4 cup water
12 ounces dark beer
salt , to taste
pepper , to taste
2 bay leaves
1/2 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
1/2 cup vegetable shortening
1/4 cup margarine
2 teaspoons cornstarch ( optional )
1 teaspoon cold water ( optional )

Instructions
