Ingredients

1 cup butter
1 1/2 cups sugar
2 1/2 cups flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
2 teaspoons baking powder
1 cup buttermilk ( or sour milk )
1/4 cup poppy seed
4 eggs ( separated )
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 teaspoons cocoa
1/3 cup white sugar
1 teaspoon cinnamon ( I do not add the cinnamon )

Instructions

1.Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 10 inch (25 mm) round cake pan.
2.In a large bowl, cream butter and 1 1/2 cups sugar until fluffy.
3.Add egg yolks one at a time, beating well after each addition.
4.In a separate bowl, sift together flour, baking soda, and baking powder.
5.Add flour mixture to butter mixture alternating with buttermilk, beginning and ending with flour mixture.
6.Beat egg whites until stiff, then gently fold into batter.
7.Add poppy seeds, vanilla, and cocoa to batter.
8.Pour batter into prepared pan.
9.In a small bowl mix together 1/3 cup sugar and cinnamon. Sprinkle over top of batter.
10.Bake cake for 50-55 minutes.
11.Let cool in pan for 10 minutes, then remove cake from pan and place on wire rack to cool completely before serving.
