2 ounces active compressed yeast
1/2 cup butter or 1/2 cup margarine
1 quart milk
1/4 cup light corn syrup
3 teaspoons salt
3 teaspoons anise seed , ground
3 teaspoons fennel , ground
2 cups rye flour
8 cups all-purpose flour ( approx )
Hono bread honokakor is a traditional Latvian bread that has been enjoyed for centuries. Instructions

1.In a large mixing bowl, dissolve yeast in warm water and let it sit for 5 minutes.
2.Melt the butter in a large saucepan and add milk, corn syrup, salt, anise seed, and fennel. Heat the mixture to 120-130°F (48-54°C).
3.Gradually add rye flour and 4 cups of all-purpose flour; beat until smooth.
4.Add enough remaining all-purpose flour to form a soft dough. Knead the dough on a floured surface for 10 minutes or until smooth and elastic.
5.Put the dough in a greased bowl, turning once to grease the top. Cover with a damp towel and let it rise in a warm place for an hour or until doubled in size.
6.Punch the dough down. Divide and shape them into four loaves. Place them into greased loaf pans and let them rise for another 30 minutes.
7.Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake for 35-40 minutes or until golden brown.
8.Remove from pans immediately and brush the top with melted butter. Cool
