2 cups all-purpose flour
1 3/4 cups white sugar
1 teaspoon baking powder
3/4 teaspoon baking soda

1/2 cup shortening

3 squares unsweetened chocolate , melted
1/3 cup butter
4 1/2 cups sifted confectioners ' sugar
1/4 cup milk
1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
1 can pitted dark sweet cherries , drained with juice reserved
1 tablespoon cornstarch
6 teaspoons orange liqueur
Black Forest Cake, also known as Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte, is a classic German dessert that has been enjoyed for many years. This version of the dessert is named after Holly, who perfected the recipe over the years. Made with layers of rich chocolate cake, cherry filling, and sweet whipped cream, this cake is a decadent treat that is perfect for any special occasion. Instructions

1.Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour 3 8-inch round cake pans.
2.In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Add water, shortening, 2 teaspoons of vanilla, and eggs, and beat at low speed until blended.
3.Add the melted chocolate and blend thoroughly.
4.Pour into prepared cake pans and bake for 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Cool on wire racks.
5.In a saucepan, melt butter and stir in cocoa powder. Alternately add confectioners' sugar and milk, beating to a spreading consistency. Add 1/2 cup cherry juice and 1/2 teaspoon vanilla. Mix together the remaining cherry juice and cornstarch, add to chocolate mixture. Cook over low heat, stirring constantly, until thick. Stir in 4 teaspoons of the orange liqueur.
6.Place one cake layer on a serving plate, spread with 1 cup frosting. Top with half of the cherries. Repeat with second layer, frosting, and cherries. Top with last cake layer, and frost top and sides of cake with the remaining frosting. Garnish with whipped cream and cherries if desired.
