1 package rusks or ( 5 ounce ) package graham crackers
1/2 cup butter , melted
1/2 cup sugar
3/4 cup sugar
6 tablespoons cornstarch
1/2 teaspoon salt
3 1/2 cups milk
4 egg yolks
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
4 egg whites
3/4 teaspoon cream of tartar
1/2 cup sugar
1/4 cup nuts , finely crushed

Instructions

1.Preheat oven to 350°F.
2.Crush rusks or graham crackers until fine and mix with melted butter. Press mixture onto the bottom of a greased baking pan to form a crust.
3.In a saucepan, mix together 1/2 cup sugar, cornstarch, and salt. Gradually stir in milk.
4.Cook, stirring constantly, until mixture thickens and boils. Allow to boil for 1 minute.
5.Beat egg yolks lightly and stir in a small amount of hot milk mixture. Stir egg yolk mixture back into remaining hot milk mixture in saucepan.
6.Cook over low heat for 2 minutes, stirring constantly. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla.
7.In a separate bowl, beat egg whites and cream of tartar until frothy. Gradually add 1/2 cup sugar, beating until stiff peaks form.
8.Fold hot mixture into egg whites and pour into crust. Sprinkle with nuts and bake for 15 minutes.
