Ingredients

1 lb Italian sausage
1 lb ground beef
1/2 cup onion , minced
2 garlic cloves , minced
1 can crushed tomatoes
2 cans tomato paste
2 cans tomato sauce
1/2 cup water
2 tablespoons sugar
1/4 cup fresh basil , chopped
1 teaspoon fennel seed
1 teaspoon italian seasoning
1/4 teaspoon pepper
1/4 teaspoon ground red pepper
16 -20 ounces ricotta cheese
1 egg
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 tablespoons fresh parsley , chopped
1/4 - 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
3/4 lb mozzarella cheese
3/4 cup parmesan cheese
1 package lasagna noodles , cooked according to directions
Heather’s Lasagna is a dish that has been enjoyed by many for generations. Lasagna originated from Italy, and it has become a popular dish worldwide. The recipe is pretty straightforward; seasoned meat sauce and lasagna noodles, arranged in layers and baked to perfection with three different types of cheese. Instructions

1.Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C)
2.In large skillet, cook sausage, beef, onion, and garlic over medium heat until well browned
3.Add crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, tomato sauce, and water into the skillet and mix well
4.Cook the mixture for at least 20 minutes until it thickens
5.Add sugar, basil, fennel, Italian seasoning, pepper, and ground red pepper to the mixture and stir well.
6.In a mixing bowl, combine ricotta cheese with egg, salt, parsley, and nutmeg
7.Stir until well combined and set aside
8.To assemble the lasagna, spread 1 and 1/2 cups of meat sauce evenly over the bottom of a 9x13 inch baking dish
9.Arrange lasagna noodles on top of the sauce layer
10.Spread half of the ricotta cheese mixture evenly over the noodles.
11.Sprinkle 1/2 of the mozzarella cheese and 1/3 of the parmesan cheese over the ricotta cheese mixture
12.Repeat the layers with meat sauce, noodles, ricotta cheese mixture, and cheese.
13.Top with the remaining meat sauce and parmesan cheese
14.Bake for 25 minutes, then increase temperature to 400°F (200°C)
15.Bake for another 25-30 minutes or until the lasagna is hot and bubbling.
16.Remove lasagna from oven and let it cool for 15 minutes before serving.
