Ingredients

1/2 cup butter , at room temperature , divided ( plus extra for the dish )
12 -14 slices rye bread ( with caraway seeds )
3 tablespoons Dijon mustard
1 sweet onion , thinly sliced
3/4 3/4 lb ( or thinly sliced ) or 3/4 lb cheddar cheese , shredded ( or thinly sliced )
3/4 lb thinly sliced cooked ham
6 large eggs
2 1/2 cups milk
1 tablespoon chopped fresh basil ( or 1 t. dried )
1 teaspoon salt
1 1/2 cups homemade fine dry breadcrumbs or 1 1/2 cups panko breadcrumbs
1/4 cup fresh grated parmesan cheese
Ham and Cheese-Stuffed French Toast is a hearty and delicious breakfast dish that is perfect for a lazy weekend morning or a special occasion brunch. Instructions

1.Preheat the oven to 375°F.
2.Coat a 9 by 13-inch baking dish with butter.
3.Spread the mustard on one side of each slice of bread.
4.Lay half of the bread, mustard side up, in the prepared baking dish.
5.Arrange the slices of onion over the bread.
6.Evenly spread the grated cheese over the onions. Top the cheese with the ham slices.
7.Top the ham with the remaining bread, mustard side down, to make sandwiches.
8.In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, basil, and salt. Pour the egg mixture over the sandwiches, making sure that all of the bread is coated.
9.Cover the baking dish with foil and bake for 30 minutes.
10.Remove the foil, sprinkle the breadcrumbs and parmesan cheese over the top, and bake for additional 15-20 minutes until golden brown.
11.Let the dish cool for a few minutes before serving.
