Instructions

1.Slice the potatoes into 1/4-inch thick pieces. Boil the potatoes with salt for about 5 minutes in a saucepan. Drain the potatoes and set aside.
2.Preheat the oven to 350°F. Coat a 13x9 inch baking dish with vegetable oil.
3.In a skillet, cook the beef and onion together over medium-high heat until the beef is browned and the onion is tender. Drain the beef and return it to the skillet.
4.Add butter to the beef and stir until it melts. Add flour and 1 teaspoon salt and stir continuously for 2 minutes.
5.Add milk, stirring continuously until the mixture thickens. Add cheddar cheese and 1/2 cup water, stirring until cheese melts.
6.Arrange half the sliced potatoes in the bottom of the baking dish, add half of the meat mixture on top, then add the remaining potatoes. Sprinkle remaining half of the meat and pour the water on top of it.
7.Cover with foil and bake for 45 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for another 10-15 minutes, or until the top is browned. Let it cool for 5 minutes before serving.
