Ingredients

2 large heads of cabbage
2 lbs ground beef
1 lb sage pork sausage
1 1/2 lbs lean ground venison or 1 1/2 lbs lean ground beef
2 tablespoons minced garlic
2 large onions , coarsely chopped
2 cups uncooked white rice
1 teaspoon red pepper flakes
2 teaspoons dried dill
salt and pepper
2 cans whole tomatoes with juice
2 cans tomato sauce
2 cups chicken broth
Guluptsie, also known as cabbage rolls, are a classic comfort food that can be found throughout Eastern Europe and Russia. While the recipe varies from region to region, the basic premise remains the same: seasoned meat and rice mixture is wrapped in blanched cabbage leaves and baked in a tomato-based sauce until tender and flavorful. The result is a hearty and satisfying dish that is perfect for chilly evenings or special occasions.

Instructions

1.Preheat oven to 350°F.
2.Bring a large pot of salted water to boil. Add whole heads of cabbage and boil for 5 minutes. Remove from water and set aside until cool enough to handle. Peel off outer leaves of cabbage and trim thick ribs.
3.In a large mixing bowl, combine beef, sausage, venison or additional beef, garlic, chopped onions, rice, red pepper flakes, dill, salt and pepper. Mix together with your hands or a wooden spoon.
4.In a separate mixing bowl, combine the tomatoes, tomato sauce, and chicken broth. Mix together and set aside.
5.Place 1/2 cup of meat mixture in center of cabbage leaf. Roll leaf up from bottom and overlap sides until filling is completely enclosed. Repeat with remaining leaves and filling.
6.Pour tomato mixture over cabbage rolls and bake in preheated oven for 2 hours.
7.Once done, remove from oven and let stand for 5-10 minutes before serving.
