Ingredients

2 lbs potatoes
1 clove garlic , crushed
2 -3 ounces softened butter
1 cup milk
grated nutmeg
salt and pepper
1/2 cup grated gruyere cheese
Originating from the region of Dauphiné in France, Gratin Dauphinois is a staple of French cuisine and comfort food at its best. Its creamy texture and delicious flavors make it a perfect accompaniment to a variety of meals or a main dish on its own. The Australian version of this dish is very similar to the French classic. The difference is in the choice of cheese. While the French use Emmental or Comté cheese, Aussies usually opt for Gruyere or Cheddar cheese. With its golden crust and soft, buttery interior, this dish will leave your taste buds asking for more!

Instructions

1.Preheat the oven to 190 degrees Celsius.
2.Peel and slice the potatoes very thinly (a mandolin can make this job much easier).
3.Rub a baking dish with the crushed garlic and then lightly grease it with butter.
4.Arrange the potato slices in layers, seasoning each layer with salt and pepper as you go. Dot each layer with small pieces of butter and sprinkle some nutmeg.
5.When you finish layering the potatoes, pour the milk over the dish.
6.Cover with foil and bake the dish for 45 minutes.
7.Remove the foil, sprinkle the grated Gruyere cheese over the potatoes, and bake for another 15-20 minutes until golden and bubbly.
