Ingredients

3/4 cup water
3/4 cup sugar
1 1/2 cups honey
2 inches piece cinnamon sticks
4 lemon slices
4 orange slices
2 cups finely chopped walnuts or 2 cups ground walnuts
1 cup finely chopped blanched almonds or 1 cup ground blanched almond
3/4 cup sugar
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1 package prepared phyllo pastry , leaves thawed if frozen ( 15x12 ) or ( 1 lb ) package prepared strudel pastry dough , thawed if frozen ( 15x12 )
1 1/2 cups unsalted butter , melted

Instructions

1.Preheat oven to 350°F.
2.In a saucepan over medium heat, combine water, 3/4 cup sugar, honey, cinnamon sticks, lemon slices, and orange slices. Bring to a boil, stirring constantly until sugar dissolves. Reduce heat to low and simmer for 5 minutes. Remove from heat.
3.Combine walnuts, blanched almonds, 3/4 cup sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg in a bowl. Mix well.
4.Brush a 15x10x1-inch pan with melted butter. Unroll phyllo dough and place 1 sheet into the bottom of the pan. Brush with melted butter. Repeat with 7 more layers of phyllo.
5.Sprinkle 2/3 cup of nut mixture over the phyllo. Repeat this step with 8 more layers of phyllo and nut mixture.
6.Top with 8 layers of phyllo, brushing each layer with melted butter. Brush the final layer with melted butter.
7.Cut into 30 diamond-shaped portions.
8.Bake for 30-40 minutes or until golden brown. Remove from oven and immediately pour the cooled syrup over the hot baklava.
9.Allow to cool completely before serving.
