Ingredients

1 liter dry red wine
1 lemon , sliced
2 cinnamon sticks
3 cloves
3 tablespoons sugar
cardamom
Glühwein, also known as German Mulled Wine, is a traditional hot beverage commonly enjoyed in Germany during the winter season. Its combination of spices and warmth make it a perfect drink to warm up with on a cold night. It is also a popular drink at Christmas markets throughout Germany. The history of Glühwein can be traced back to the 2nd century when wine was usually not aged and therefore was very sour. To improve the taste, spices and sweetness were added to the wine. Today, it is still a beloved beverage enjoyed by many.

Instructions

1.Pour the red wine in a large pot and heat on medium heat.
2.Add the sliced lemon, cinnamon sticks and cloves to the pot.
3.Add the sugar and cardamom to the pot.
4.Heat the mixture until it is hot but not boiling.
5.Lower the heat and let it simmer for 10-15 minutes.
6.Strain the mulled wine mixture and serve hot in mugs.
7.Optional: if you want to make it more festive you can also add a splash of brandy or rum to the mulled wine.
