Ingredients

225 g sweet unsalted butter
100 g powdered sugar
1 tablespoon vanilla sugar
3 egg yolks
1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon , to taste ( she said 2 dashes )
200 g all-purpose flour
40 g unsweetened cocoa powder
1 teaspoon baking powder
125 g finely ground hazelnuts
2 cups nutella chocolate hazelnut spread , approximately
125 g bittersweet chocolate , more as needed ( such as Lindt brand ) ( optional )
1 teaspoon shortening ( optional )
German Nougatstangerl Cookies are a traditional German Christmas cookie that originated in Bavaria. These cookies are shaped like a twisted rope and filled with a rich and creamy nutella chocolate hazelnut spread. The dough is made with finely ground hazelnuts and cocoa powder, giving it a nutty and chocolatey flavor. These cookies are a delicious treat to share with family and friends during the festive season, or to enjoy all year round with a cup of coffee or tea.

Instructions

1.In a mixing bowl, cream the butter with the powdered and vanilla sugar until light and fluffy.
2.Add the egg yolks one at a time, mixing well after each addition.
3.Briefly mix in the ground cinnamon.
4.Sift together the all-purpose flour, cocoa powder, and baking powder. Gradually mix the sifted mixture into the butter mixture.
5.Stir in the finely ground hazelnuts to form a dough.
6.Preheat the oven to 175 degrees Celsius (350 degrees Fahrenheit).
7.Divide the dough into 6 equal portions and roll them out into 20 cm (8-inch) long ropes.
8.Transfer the ropes onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and indent them down the middle by pressing gently.
9.Fill the indentation with nutella chocolate hazelnut spread.
10.Bake for 12-15 minutes until the cookies are set.
11.Allow them to cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.
12.Optional: melt the bittersweet chocolate with shortening in a double-boiler to drizzle over the cooled cookies for decoration. Leave to set before serving.
