Ingredients

1 cup lean ground beef
1 egg
2 slices white bread , crusts removed
1 small onion , minced
1 1/2 teaspoons salt
1/2 teaspoon curry powder
1/2 teaspoon mace , ground
1/2 teaspoon pepper , ground
3 tablespoons butter
1/2 cup water or 1/2 cup beef stock
to taste ketjap manis or maggi seasoning
Gehaktballen, aka Dutch meatballs, are traditional Dutch cuisine passed down from generation to generation. These are round balls made with lean ground beef, onion, spices, and egg. Although Gehaktballen is a carryover from the 19th century, it is still one of the most beloved foods in the Netherlands. Dutch people commonly serve this dish with boiled or mashed potatoes and coleslaw. It is an easy-to-make, hearty meal that is ideal for any family dinner or special occasion.

Instructions

1.In a large bowl, tear bread slices into small pieces and pour water to it. Let it sit for a while to soak.
2.Add minced onion, ground beef, egg, salt, curry powder, mace, pepper, and half of the butter to the bowl. Mix everything with hands until all ingredients cling together.
3.Use hands to form meatballs of medium size.
4.In a skillet, heat rest of the butter. Place meatballs carefully in the skillet and maintain medium heat. Turn meatballs until they are brown from all sides.
5.Add water or beef stock to the skillet of meatballs. Cover and let it simmer for 20 minutes.
6.Once meatballs are cooked, remove them from skillet and keep them warm. Add ketjap manis or maggi seasoning to the skillet to make a thick sauce.
7.Serve these meatballs with mashed potatoes and vegetables of your choice, and thick brown sauce.
