Ingredients

1 liter milk
110 g white sugar
185 g semolina
4 eggs
40 g vanilla sugar
2 teaspoons lemon rind , finely grated
12 sheets phyllo pastry , halved crossways
75 g butter , melted
450 g white sugar
500 ml water
2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
1 cinnamon stick
6 cloves
1 strip orange peel
Galaktoboureko is a traditional Greek dessert made with layers of phyllo pastry and a creamy semolina custard. The dish is typically served with a syrup made from sugar, lemon, and cinnamon, which adds a sweet and tangy flavor to the dish. Instructions

1.Preheat oven to 180 degrees C (350 degrees F).
2.Grease a 22cm square baking dish.
3.In a large saucepan over medium heat, combine milk and sugar and heat until sugar dissolves. Reduce heat to low and gradually add in semolina, whisking constantly until mixture thickens.
4.Beat together eggs, vanilla sugar, and lemon rind until creamy. Add this mixture to semolina mixture, whisking together to combine.
5.Lay halved phyllo pastry in the baking dish and brush with melted butter. Top with more pastry layers, brushing with butter in between. Pour the custard on top of the phyllo pastry.
6.Bake for 35 to 40 minutes, or until top is golden brown.
7.In a medium saucepan over medium heat, combine remaining sugar, water, lemon juice, cinnamon stick, cloves, and orange peel. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 10 minutes.
8.Discard the cinnamon, orange peel and cloves from the syrup and pour it over the cooked cake, let it sit for an hour or until ready to serve.
