Ingredients

2 tablespoons butter
2 large yellow onions , thinly sliced lengthwise
1 pinch salt & fresh ground pepper , to taste
1 tablespoon sherry wine vinegar
2 tablespoons butter
2 1/2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
2 1/2 cups milk
1 pinch ground nutmeg
1 pinch cayenne pepper , to taste ( optional )
1/4 teaspoon ground thyme
2 tablespoons butter , melted
2/3 cup panko breadcrumbs
2 lbs fresh green beans , trimmed
4 ounces gruyere cheese , shredded and divided
1/3 cup parmesan cheese , grated
The French Onion Green Bean Casserole is a delicious and savory twist on the traditional green bean casserole recipe. Instructions

1.Preheat oven to 375°F.
2.In a large skillet, melt 2 tbsp butter on medium-high heat.
3.Add sliced onions, salt & pepper to taste and sauté for 15-20 minutes until golden brown.
4.Add sherry wine vinegar and stir to combine. Remove from heat and set aside.
5.In a medium saucepan, melt 2 tbsp butter on medium heat.
6.Whisk in all-purpose flour and stir for 1-2 minutes until the mixture turns golden brown.
7.Gradually pour in milk while whisking continuously until the mixture thickens.
8.Add nutmeg, cayenne pepper and ground thyme. Mix well.
9.Add half of gruyere cheese and all parmesan cheese to the sauce mixture. Stir until the cheese has melted and all ingredients are combined.
10.In a separate large pot, cook trimmed green beans in salted water for 5-7 minutes until tender.
11.Drain green beans and combine with the sauce mixture.
12.Transfer the bean and sauce mixture to a 9 x 13 inch casserole dish.
13.Top with 1/2 of the remaining shredded gruyere cheese and sautéed onions.
14.Combine the melted butter and panko breadcrumbs in a small bowl and sprinkle over the casserole.
15.Bake for 25-30 minutes until golden brown and bubbly.
