Instructions

.In a small saucepan, heat raspberry jam over low heat until melted. Stir in warm water to thin out the jam.

.Scatter the dried tart cherries and diced pears on top of the cake layer. Pour the melted raspberry jam over the fruit and cake layer. Top with half of the toasted slivered almonds.
.Repeat the cake layer, soaking with wine, the fruit layer, raspberry jam and almond layer, and end with the final layer of toasted almonds.
.In a medium-sized bowl, whisk together the sugar, flour, nutmeg, and salt. In another saucepan, heat the milk until hot. Gradually whisk the hot milk into the flour mixture. Cook and stir the mixture over medium heat until it thickens to a custard consistency, about 10 minutes.
.Remove the custard from the heat and stir in beaten egg yolks and vanilla extract. Transfer the custard into a bowl and cover with plastic wrap. Chill in the refrigerator until cool.
.In a separate bowl, beat heavy cream with confectioners' sugar and vanilla extract until stiff peaks form. Fold the whipped cream into the chilled custard until well combined.
.Spoon the custard mixture over the top of the trifle, spreading it evenly to the edges.
