Ingredients

3 cakes compressed fresh yeast
1 cup warm milk
1/2 cup melted butter
2 eggs
1 1/2 teaspoons salt
2 teaspoons white sugar
4 cups all-purpose flour , or as needed
1 cup milk
1 tablespoon cornstarch

Fastelavnsboller is a traditional Danish pastry which is typically enjoyed during the carnival season, as well as on Sundays leading up to the Lenten season. It is a sweet and soft pastry bun popular especially among kids. The pastry is made with fresh compressed yeast, milk and butter, combined with sugar, salt, and flour, and filled with a whipped custard made with milk, cornstarch, eggs and sugar. To top it off, chocolate glaze is drizzled over the pastry for ultimate satisfaction to the sweet tooth.

Instructions

1.In a small bowl dissolve yeast in warm milk, let stand until creamy for about 10 minutes.
2.In a large bowl, combine yeast mix and melted butter, eggs, salt and sugar.
3.Add flour gradually and stir well, after which place dough in to lightly greased bowl and cover it with a cloth for about 1 hour until double in size or refrigerate overnight.
4.Preheat oven to 375F and place dough on floured surface and roll out until 1/4 inch thickness. Cut out 12-14 rounds and place them on prepared baking sheet.
5.For filling, mix cornstarch, milk, sugar and vanilla in medium saucepan. Upon heating, stir occasionally over medium heat until mixture become thick. Take saucepan off the heat and stir in the beaten eggs.
6.Spoon the filling onto each dough circle by making a small dent or indentation on top of each circle and bake it for 10-12 minutes.
7.For icing, beat the confectioners' sugar, water and cocoa together until smooth and it reaches the desired consistency. After the pastries baked, let them cool off a bit and drizzle the icing on top of Fastelavnsboller before serving.
