Ingredients

1 kg flour
100 g fresh yeast , in cubes ( or 2 teaspoons active , dried yeast )
400 ml whole milk , lukewarm ( around 80 degrees F )
75 -100 g sugar ( to taste )
one vanilla bean
2 eggs
grated peel of one lemon
1 teaspoon salt
400 g butter
200 g flour
350 g raisins ( or mix of raisins and dried black currants )
100 g blanched chopped almonds
50 g candied diced citron
100 g candied diced orange peel
4 -5 cl rum ( that 's about two shots worth )
150 g butter
150 g powdered sugar
Dresdner Stollen is a traditional German fruitcake that originated in Dresden, Germany. The recipe dates back to the 15th century and has been passed down through generations of families. Its signature blend of dried fruits, nuts, and spices makes it the perfect dish for holiday feasting. It is typically made a few weeks before Christmas and stored to allow the flavors to meld. When it's time to enjoy it, Dresdner Stollen is often passed around with family and friends, accompanied with mulled wine or hot cocoa. A perfect, indulgent treat for the holidays.

Instructions

1.In a large bowl dissolve 1 tsp. sugar in the warm milk. Add yeast and let stand for 10 mins. to activate.
2.Add flour, remaining sugar, vanilla, eggs, grated lemon peel, and salt to the dissolved yeast mixture. Knead to form dough.
3.Add butter in small portions and knead for 10 minutes, then cover and let rise in a warm place for 1 hour.
4.Add raisins, blanched almonds, candied citron and orange peel, and rum to dough. Knead for a few minutes, then shape dough by hand into an oblong loaf.
5.Put shaped dough on a buttered baking sheet and let rise in a warm place for another 15 mins.
6.Bake for 50 to 60 minutes at 375°F until golden brown. Melt 150g of butter and brush onto hot Stollen. Powder with 150g powdered sugar.
7.Let cool and store for 3 to 4 weeks before eating to help flavor meld.
