Ingredients

1 cup water

2 tablespoons butter , melted ( for basting )
1 egg , room temperature
2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
1/4 cup saco buttermilk baking mix
3 1/2 cups bread flour
1/4 cup sugar
1 lemon , zest of , minced
1 1/2 tablespoons ground cardamom
3/4 teaspoon ground ginger
1 teaspoon salt
1 cup powdered sugar
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1 tablespoon rose water
6 saffron strands , ground

Instructions

1.Combine water, oil, melted butter and egg in large bowl of stand mixer fitted with paddle attachment.
2.Add yeast, baking mix, bread flour, sugar, lemon zest, cardamom, ginger, salt and saffron to the bowl and beat at low speed until all the dry ingredients are moistened.
3.Beat at medium speed for about 5 minutes until the dough is smooth and elastic.
4.Let the dough rest for 10 minutes and divide it into 12 pieces. Form each into a smooth round ball and place into a greased or parchment-lined baking pan, making sure they are touching.
5.Let the dough rise for 45 minutes in a warm and draft-free place.
6.Preheat oven to 375°F. Bake for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown. Cool on wire rack.
7.In a small bowl, whisk powdered sugar, lemon juice, rosewater and a teaspoon of water. Pipe diagonals of mixture across each bun in place of the cross.
