Donauwellen is a classic German dessert that translates to 'Danube Waves' in English. This delicious cake is made with layers of chocolate cake, creamy vanilla custard, and tart cherries, all topped with a layer of melted chocolate. This dessert is known for its distinctive wave-like appearance, which is created by the spoonfuls of cake batter that are dropped over the custard layer before baking. Donauwellen is a popular dessert in Germany and other parts of Europe, and it's sure to impress your guests at your next dinner party or holiday gathering.

Instructions

1.Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9x13 inch baking dish.
2.In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla extract. Add the flour, salt, and baking soda, and mix until just combined.
3.Divide the batter in half. To one half, add the cocoa powder and milk, stirring until well combined. Pour the chocolate batter into the prepared baking dish. Spread the drained cherries over the chocolate layer.
4.To make the custard, whisk together the cornstarch, sugar, milk, and vanilla extract in a medium saucepan. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until thickened. Pour the custard over the cherries in the baking dish.
5.Drop spoonfuls of the remaining cake batter over the custard layer and gently spread it out with a spatula. Bake for 40-45 minutes, or until the cake is lightly browned and a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
6.Let the cake cool completely. In a microwave-safe bowl, melt the chocolate chips and vegetable oil together, stirring until smooth. Spread the chocolate mixture over the cooled cake, then chill the cake in the fridge for 30 minutes to set the chocolate. Slice and serve chilled or at room temperature.
