Ingredients

110 g margarine
110 g sugar
1 tablespoon treacle
2 eggs
100 g plain flour ( all purpose )
2 tablespoons cocoa powder
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon instant coffee powder
6 tablespoons milk
60 g margarine
2 tablespoons cocoa powder
1 tablespoon treacle
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract ( or essence )
Devonshire Chocolate Sponge is a classic British dessert that originated in Devon. It is a simple and delicious chocolate cake that is perfect for any occasion. This recipe combines the rich flavours of cocoa powder, treacle and vanilla extract to create a decadent cake that will satisfy even the biggest chocolate cravings. It can be served as a dessert after dinner or enjoyed as a sweet snack with a cup of tea or coffee.

Instructions

1.Preheat the oven to 180°C/160°C fan/gas 4.
2.Grease and line two 20cm sandwich tins.
3.Cream the margarine and sugar together in a mixing bowl until light and fluffy.
4.Beat in the treacle and eggs, one at a time.
5.Sift the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder and instant coffee powder into the bowl and stir.
6.Add milk and beat everything together until smooth.
7.Divide the mixture equally between the two tins.
8.Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes or until a skewer inserted into the centre of the cakes comes out clean.
9.Leave to cool in the tins.
10.To make the buttercream, mix the margarine, cocoa powder and treacle in a mixing bowl until smooth.
11.Add the vanilla extract and mix well.
12.Once the cakes have cooled, spread buttercream on top of one cake and sandwich the other cake on top.
13.Spread the rest of the buttercream on top of the cake.
14.Serve and enjoy!
