Dave's Bread and Butter Pudding is a traditional British dessert that has been around for centuries. It's believed to have originated as a way to use up stale bread, which was soaked in milk and eggs before being baked with sugar and spices. Over time, the recipe evolved to include butter, caramel, and fruit, resulting in the delicious dessert we know and love today. While it's often served with custard or cream, it's also a popular breakfast option in some parts of the UK. Give it a try and see why this classic dessert has stood the test of time.

Instructions

1.Preheat the oven to 180C/350F/gas 4. Grease a deep, 20cm/8in baking dish with butter.
2.Melt the butter in a saucepan, add the brown sugar and 2 tablespoons of water. Cook until it turns into a light caramel. Pour over the bottom of the baking dish.
3.Peel, core and thinly slice the apple. Cut the crusts off the bread, then spread each slice with butter. Cut each slice in half diagonally.
4.Arrange a layer of bread, slightly overlapping, over the caramel. Top with a layer of sliced apple and sultanas, then repeat with the remaining bread, apple and sultanas, making sure the top layer is neat and tidy.
5.In a saucepan, heat the cream but do not let it boil. In a bowl, whisk the eggs and caster sugar until combined. Pour the warm cream over the egg mixture, whisking constantly until smooth. Pour the mixture over the bread, then set aside for 10 mins to soak.
6.Sit the dish in a deep roasting tin and pour boiling water into the tin so it comes halfway up the sides of the dish.
7.Bake for 35-40 mins, or until the pudding is just set and golden brown. Set aside for 5 mins to cool slightly before serving.
