Ingredients

1 pinch asafoetida powder
2 tablespoons bengal gram dal , split ( chana dal )
2 -3 medium red capsicums
4 -5 curry leaves
1/2 teaspoon mustard seeds
6 tablespoons oil
1/2 cup split peas
3 -4 red chilies , whole
salt , to taste

Instructions

1.Soak the split peas and chana dal in water for at least an hour and then rinse them well.
2.Heat oil in a wide pan, add mustard seeds and let them splutter.
3.Add asafoetida, red chilies and curry leaves and fry for a few seconds.
4.Add the split peas, chana dal and salt. Fry for a minute.
5.Add 1 1/2 cups of water and bring to a boil.
6.Add chopped capsicum and cook for 10 minutes. Stir occasionally.
7.The dal should be cooked and soft by this time. Check salt and serve hot.
