Ingredients

2 cups moong lentils ( orange colored )
6 cups water
1 tablespoon , 5 spice blend ( indian version )
1/2 teaspoon cumin powder
1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
1/2 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
1 teaspoon salt , adjust to desired taste
1 medium onion
3 garlic cloves , chopped
3 tablespoons canola oil
1/2 cup fresh cilantro ( optional )
Daal is a traditional Bengali lentil soup. The soup is flavored with 5 spice blend, cumin powder, and turmeric powder to give it a unique and aromatic essence. Instructions

1.Rinse the moong lentils in water and soak them for 30 minutes.
2.Drain the water and add the lentils to a large pot with 6 cups of water, 5 spice blend, cumin powder, turmeric powder, red pepper flakes, and salt. Bring to a boil over high heat.
3.Reduce heat to low and let it simmer for 30-40 minutes until the lentils have softened.
4.In a separate pan, heat oil over medium-high heat and sauté chopped onions and garlic for 2-3 minutes until it turns brown.
5.Add the sautéed onions and garlic to the lentils soup.
6.Serve hot in a bowl and garnish with fresh cilantro.
