Ingredients

3 cups sugar
2 cups hard alcoholic cider ( or Cyser )
1 star anise ( use 1 cinnamon stick if you do n't have anise )
1 lemon , juice of ( to taste , I usually add more )
2 -3 tablespoons honey
1 lb walnuts ( may mix with almonds or pecans )
1/3 cup sugar
1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
1 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/4 teaspoon ground allspice
1 lb phyllo dough
1 lb butter ( melted and clarified if you prefer )

Cyser Baklava is a popular Mediterranean dessert that's commonly served during special occasions like Eid, Ramadan, or Christmas. The name 'cyser' refers to a type of hard cider used in the recipe that originated in Medieval England. Today, it is commonly made in several countries worldwide in variations like nut-free or fruit-filled baklava. Though the ingredients and process might seem intimidating, don't be afraid to give it a try. The result is a delicious dessert that you can enjoy with family and friends any time of the year.

Instructions

1.Preheat oven to 350°F.
2.In a saucepan, combine sugar, alcoholic cider, star anise, lemon juice, and honey.
3.Bring to a boil and then reduce heat to a simmer and continue to cook until the mixture has reduced and thickened.
4.In a food processor, pulse walnuts with sugar, cloves, nutmeg, and allspice until coarsely ground.
5.Unwrap the phyllo dough and cover with a damp towel. Brush a baking dish with butter.
6.Begin layering phyllo dough sheets brushing each layer with butter.
7.Once you've layered half of the phyllo, spread walnut mixture on top.
8.Continue to layer the rest of the dough, brushing with butter each time.
9.Press down gently and cut into diamond shapes about 1x2 inches.
10.Press a whole clove into the top of each baklava.
11.Bake in the preheated oven for 45 minutes.
12.Once done, pour the syrup over the top of the hot baklava. Let it cool completely before serving.

Cyser Baklava is a perfect blend of nutty and sweet flavors that melt in your mouth.
The crispy phyllo dough layered with the honey-cider syrup is truly divine.

CONS

This dessert is quite high in calories and sugar.
It is not suitable for people with diabetes or those who are watching their weight.
