Ingredients

1 cup channa dal ( dried chickpeas , or garbanzos )
1 teaspoon tea leaves
1 teaspoon salt
5 cups water
1 tablespoon water
3 tablespoons ghee
1/2 teaspoon cumin seed
1/4 cup chopped onion
1 tablespoon scraped finely chopped ginger
1/2 teaspoon turmeric
1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
1/2 teaspoon ground coriander
1/2 teaspoon garam masala
1/4 teaspoon ground cayenne pepper
1 tablespoon chopped coriander ( cilantro )
Curried Chick-Peas (Chana Dal) is a popular Indian dish made with channa dal, a type of lentil, and a blend of spices, including cumin, coriander, turmeric, and garam masala. Instructions

1.In a large pot, rinse the channa dal and tea leaves with water. Drain and add 5 cups of fresh water and salt.
2.Bring to a boil over medium heat. Reduce heat to low, cover, and gently boil for about 35-40 minutes or until the dal is tender.
3.In a frying pan, heat the ghee and add cumin seeds. Once they start to sizzle, add onion and ginger. Sauté for 3-4 minutes or until onions get light brown in color.
4.Add turmeric, cumin, coriander, garam masala, and cayenne pepper. Stir for a few seconds. Reduce heat.
5.Add about 1/4th cup of cooked masala to the pot of cooked dal. Mix and cook for about 10-15 minutes over low heat. Add some water if it's too thick.
6.Once done, mix in some chopped cilantro and serve hot.
