Instructions

1.In a large mixing bowl, stir together the caster sugar and cornflour.

3.Add the milk mixture to the bowl with the sugar and cornflour, whisking continuously until everything is well combined.
4.Return the mixture to the saucepan and cook over medium-low heat, whisking continuously.
5.Once the mixture starts to thicken, add in the butter and continue whisking until it forms a thick, smooth, and glossy custard.
6.Meanwhile, arrange slices of trifle sponge cakes in individual dessert bowls and sprinkle sultanas, chopped dates, and pecan nuts over them.
7.Pour the warm custard over the sponge cakes and nuts and let it set.
8.Once the blancmanges have cooled down, cut a small circle on top and add a dollop of whipped cream to garnish.
