Ingredients

1 package dry yeast
3 tablespoons lukewarm water
2 cups warm water
1 1/2 tablespoons cooking oil or 1 1/2 tablespoons shortening
1/4 cup sugar , shopping list
3/4 teaspoon salt
6 cups sifted flour
1/2 tablespoon sesame oil
1 cup water
2 tablespoons cornstarch
2 tablespoons brown sugar
1 tablespoon hoisin sauce
1 tablespoon dry sherry
1 tablespoon catsup
2 tablespoons oyster sauce
2 tablespoons soy sauce
1 lb chinese barbeque pork , diced ( Char Siu )
Manapua, also known as Char Siu Bao, is a popular Hawaiian snack that originated from China. Instructions

1.In a bowl, dissolve yeast in 3 tablespoons lukewarm water and let stand for 10 minutes.
2.In a separate large bowl, combine flour, sugar, and salt.
3.Add yeast mixture, 1/2 tablespoon sesame oil, 2 cups warm water, and cooking oil or shortening to the dry ingredients. Mix well and knead dough until smooth and shiny.
4.Cover the bowl with cling wrap and let rise in a warm place until double in size, for about 1 hour.
5.For the filling, mix cornstarch and water. Stir in brown sugar, hoisin sauce, dry sherry, catsup, oyster sauce, and soy sauce. Add Chinese barbeque pork and stir until well combined.
6.Divide the dough into 20 to 24 equal portions and roll out each portion into a circle about 1/8-inch thick. Place a heaping tablespoon of filling in the center of each circle. Pinch the edges together to seal, then place on waxed paper. Let stand for 10 minutes.
7.Arrange the Manapuas on a steamer and let stand for another 10 minutes.
8.Steam the buns over boiling water for 15 minutes and serve hot.
