Ingredients

3 1/4 teaspoons dry yeast ( about 1-1/2 packages )
1/4 cup warm water
1/2 cup shortening
1/3 cup sugar
1 1/2 teaspoons salt
1 cup milk
1 egg
4 -5 cups sifted flour
melted butter
brown sugar
cinnamon
raisins ( optional )
2 cups powdered sugar
1 tablespoon butter , melted
1 teaspoon vanilla
milk or cream ( 2 to 4 tablespoons )

Instructions

1.In a large bowl, dissolve yeast in warm water.
2.In a separate saucepan, heat shortening, sugar, salt, and milk until shortening is melted. Let cool to lukewarm.
3.Add egg and 2 cups of flour to yeast mixture, and stir to combine. Gradually add in milk mixture, and continue to stir until well combined.
4.Add in enough remaining flour to form a soft dough. Turn dough out onto a floured surface, and knead until smooth and elastic.
5.Place dough in a greased bowl, cover with a cloth, and let rise in a warm place until doubled in size (about 1 hour).
6.Punch down dough, and roll out into a rectangle shape. Brush melted butter on top of the dough, then sprinkle brown sugar, cinnamon, and raisins on top.
7.Roll up the dough tightly, and slice into even pieces.
8.Place slices in a greased baking dish, and let rise again until doubled in size (about 30 minutes).
9.Bake in a preheated oven at 375°F for 25-30 minutes, or until golden brown.
10.Mix powdered sugar, melted butter, vanilla, and just enough milk or cream to make a smooth and creamy frosting.
11.Spread frosting over hot cinnamon rolls, and serve immediately.
