2 envelopes fast rising yeast
1 1/4 cups sour milk or 1 1/4 cups buttermilk
2 eggs
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup margarine
6 cups all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
2 teaspoons salt
2 cups icing sugar
2 tablespoons water

Instructions

1.Preheat oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit.
2.In a small bowl, combine 1 tablespoon of the sugar with the warm water and yeast. Stir and let sit for 5 minutes.
3.In a large bowl, mix together the sour milk or buttermilk, remaining sugar, eggs, and margarine.
4.Add the yeast mixture to the large bowl and mix together.
5.Gradually add the flour, baking powder, and salt to the mixture and mix until dough forms.
6.Add the maraschino cherries, mixed candied fruit, slivered almonds, mincemeat, raisins (or currants) to the dough and mix.
7.Knead the dough on a floured surface until smooth.
8.Divide the dough into small balls and roll into long ropes, about 1/2 inch thick.
9.Twist the ropes like a candy cane and place on a greased baking sheet.
10.Bake for 10-12 minutes or until golden brown.
11.In a small bowl, mix together the icing sugar and 2 tablespoons of water to make a glaze. Drizzle over the cooled Christmas Jewel Canes and enjoy!
