Ingredients

1 cup whole milk
1 cup unsalted butter
1 cup margarine
1 cup white sugar
1/2 cup lukewarm water
2 teaspoons white sugar
2 ( .25 ounce ) envelopes active dry yeast
5 eggs
6 cups all-purpose flour , or as needed
1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1 1/2 tablespoons ground mahleb
1 1/2 teaspoons salt
1 egg , beaten
1 tablespoon sesame seeds
Choereg, also known as Armenian Easter Bread, is a traditional bread that is served during the Armenian Easter holiday. The bread is sweetened with sugar and flavored with mahleb, a spice that is made from the seeds of a cherry tree. Choereg is a celebratory bread, baked to be shared with family and friends. Instructions

1.Warm the milk, butter, and margarine in a small saucepan over low heat.
2.In a separate bowl, mix 2 teaspoons of sugar and the yeast into lukewarm water and mix.
3.In a large bowl, beat the 5 eggs, then add the flour, baking powder, mahleb, and salt.
4.Add the yeast mixture and the warm milk mixture into the egg mixture, stirring until smooth.
5.Knead the dough on a floured surface for 10-15 minutes, or until it becomes smooth.
6.Place the dough in a greased bowl and cover with a towel. Let rise for 1-2 hours, or until doubled in size.
7.Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
8.Divide the dough into 4 parts, then divide each part into 3 strands. Braid each strand and then braid the 3 braids together to form a loaf.
9.Brush the loaves with beaten egg, sprinkle with sesame seeds, and bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown.
