Instructions

1.In a large saucepan, heat the milk, heavy cream, and first 1/3 cup of sugar over medium heat, stirring occasionally.
2.In a bowl, whisk the egg yolks, second 1/3 cup of sugar, espresso powder, and vanilla extract until pale and frothy.
3.Pour the hot milk mixture into the egg mixture, whisking constantly.
4.Transfer the mixture back to the saucepan and cook over low heat, stirring constantly, until the mixture thickens and coats the back of a spoon.
5.Remove from heat and stir in the chopped chocolate until fully melted and smooth.
6.Pour the mixture into a shallow bowl and let it cool to room temperature, then place it in the freezer for 3-4 hours or until firm.
7.Using a cookie scoop, form balls of the gelato and place a maraschino cherry in the center of each ball.
8.Roll the balls in a mixture of chopped hazelnuts and cocoa powder, lightly pressing the mixture onto the surface.
9.Freeze the balls for at least 2 hours before serving.
