Chinese Sweet and Pungent Pork is a popular dish in Chinese cuisine, also known as Gu Lao Rou. It is usually served with steamed rice and makes for a complete meal. The pork is crispy on the outside, tender on the inside, and coated with a sweet and sour sauce. The addition of pineapple and green pepper gives it a refreshing crunch. This recipe is a healthier version of the traditional recipe because we use less oil while cooking. It is a perfect dish for a family dinner or a lazy weekend meal at home.

Instructions

1.In a bowl, beat the egg and add flour, salt and water, whisking until mixture is smooth.
2.Dip pork cubes in the mixture and coat well.
3.Heat oil in a pan and deep-fry the pork cubes until brown and crispy. Remove from oil and drain the excess oil.
4.In a separate pan, stir-fry the drained pineapple chunks and green peppers for 1-2 minutes. Remove from pan and set aside.
5.In the same pan, combine vinegar, brown sugar, water, molasses, and tomatoes. Cook for 2-3 minutes or until thick.
6.Mix cornstarch and water and add to the sauce. Stir until thick and smooth. Add the pork cubes and stir until coated with sauce.
7.Add the stir-fried pineapple and green pepper to the pan and give it a final stir.

PROS

This dish is a great combination of sweet and sour flavors, with crispy pork and crunchy vegetables.

CONS

It should be enjoyed in moderation as part of a balanced diet.

HEALTH & BENEFITS

This dish contains a good amount of protein from the pork, and vitamin C and fiber from the pineapple and green pepper.
